Re: Cockerel Question

You,re in the wrong hobby if culling is not an option, you bred the birds and its your responsiblity to see that one is either seperated, culled or rehomed.
All these options should be thought out before you go down the hobby breeding route.

Re: Chicken eating from my mouth??!

Apart from the good advice from Subruss.....i can,t help wondering how unhygenic is that, high risk i would say of picking up something there....i,ve never had it because the chances of any of my birds sitting up on my chest in the first place would be zero. What do you do ? lie on the ground for it ...

Pop a dummy egg in the nest box to encourage her to keep going into it,won,t be long till you are rewarded.

Re: Dealing with a Killer fox

In debt post alright and fair play for taking the time and effort to do it. I have caught a few rogue foxes over the years that had taken birds while out free ranging. They were caught in proper fox traps and all within a day or two of having struck,i found if they were hungry enough they,d go into ...

Re: Soft Shelled Eggs

I,m afraid in a flock situation thats exactly the route i would be going down, the danger of one or two developing a taste for eggs would be too big a chance to take and i would cull.

Re: Soft Shelled Eggs

I,d agree with HW on it possibly being genetic, the other thing i have found is if a hen has been a prolific layer and is getting on a bit they start to lay soft shelled eggs too,i,ve had to cull off a few relly nice hens due to the danger of the rest of the flock turning into egg eaters, something el...

Re: My worst moulter!

Can,t view your pic. I have a hen who hatches about 3 clutches a year without fail and during the course of brooding one of the clutches she drops all her feathers for no apparent reason. I just feed her some mashed up sardines and she is fully feathered again in no time. The sardines should be in s...

Re: That's IT

Sorry to hear that Henwife, end of an era. Early in the year i noticed a dramatic increase in the number of foxes locally, two were hanging around quite close by us here. I went to see my problem solver (local farmer with a rifle) he advised leaving them be unless they were encroaching on our ground.A...

Re: Our Hen Houses/ Coops

The perch does need raising alright but if the birds are going to be out of the run nearly all day long then it should be fine, just make sure you keep them confined to it for a few days when you first get them so they know where base is at,if buying them at pol then a few dummy eggs in the nest boxe...

Re: Cockerel Behaviour

Given a week or two to settle they should be fine, plenty of space is key and if they are getting out for a ramble then thats a bonus. I put a couple of younger hens in with a cock and two older ones and was thinking of removing them but ten days later all is good, once theres no blood drawn leave the...
