Re: Cat in Nest Box

If I put the cat somewhere else to sit out of obtuseness he won't use it. He's already got so many comfy spots in the garden and house. I also see him regularly drinking the chooks water even with acv in it.

Cat in Nest Box

I just discovered yesterday that our cat as decided that the chooks nest box (in an Eglu Cube) is good place to have a cosy nap each day. Does anyone have any ideas about how to stop him please or shall I leave him there and leave the chooks to boot him out (3 full grown bantams and 1 8 week old chi...

Re: Broody hens together?

I have had two lots of chicks hatch under 2 (first time) and 3 (second time) broody hens housed together. Each time there was no issue apart from stealing eggs from each other while sitting, but nothing nasty. The chicks hatched and were looked after by all three hens without any squabbling. Only is...

Re: Last egg to hatch - chick struggling

Just to update. The little chick is back with the brood, eating and drinking well and happily running around. It seems to be growing and although a little behind its brothers and sisters I'm very happy with its progress. that said, it was a good 24 hours behind most of its siblings. It will probably...

Re: Last egg to hatch - chick struggling

Poor thing is struggling to feed. It doesn't seem to know how to feed although it does know how to drink. I think it hasn't developed quite fully on its right side as the right wing is smaller and the right leg seems weaker. Will persevere until it's decided for me .

Re: A Rear End Issue

Can't believe it's nearly 2 years since I posted the problem. Update is that the one that laid softshelled eggs finally passed away early this year (reason unknown) and hadn't seemed to be ill at all. The one with the prolapse is fine and laying eggs well. Thanks for the advice given. I kept this on...

Last egg to hatch - chick struggling

My banties have just hatched 7 eggs. 6 are fine but the last one seems to be struggling and getting little attention. Is it best to take it away and keep it warm and check it's feeding separately, or should I separate it with one of the 3 hens that was sitting to give it a bit of one to one for a wh...

Anyone with experience of raising chicks in an Eglu Cube?

Hi My 3 bantam hens are currently hatching up to 11 Sebright eggs in an Eglu Cube and I was wondering if anyone has experience of raising bantie chicks in such a large coop and were any changes made so that the chicks could move about, get food and drink but be kept safe for a while in the coop ie s...

Re: A Rear End Issue

Hi Bluebird, thanks for the advice. I'll try the cod liver oil and oil of liquid parafin. I have tried giving them greens but they just don't touch them. I too wondered if it was a congenital condition although slightly different between the two hens, hence why I put them in the same post. I'd like ...

Re: A Rear End Issue

Son of eddy, I haven't taken any offence and sorry if you thought I had. I'm grateful for all advice as I've only been keeping hens for about 15 months. It is only one of them with the prolapse, the mother just seems to have dirty feathers round her vent. The prolapse has been put back in but she ke...

Re: Behavioural change in the coop

A belated update. I put all 4 hens into the dog crate in the garage so there would be no pecking going on when they went back outside. They were in for 2 days and nights. It then took another few days after being released again before the Pekin decided to stop brooding. I reckon, she's been broody f...

Re: A Rear End Issue

The mother hasn't always laid soft shelled eggs, but they are larger than normal for a bantie. I'm not sure if the white deposit is calcium - it was just an assumption, some of it may be natural fluids coming out if straining to lay. Neither are egg bound and certainly the daughter is laying every d...

A Rear End Issue

I have a mother and daughter pair of hens. The mother is currently consistently laying soft shelled eggs. As a result she strains a little with these and there is a white discharge (calcium around the vent) from straining. Apart from this she seems fine, eating well, meandering round the garden and ...

Preening

Hi One of my banties has just finished one of her broody spells and her breast feathers are beginning to grow back, but I have noticed that there are a lot of her feathers around the coop and garden. I watched her yesterday having a good old preen with the other 3 and she was pulling feathers out fr...
