Re: Crossing Marans and Cochin/Faverolles?

Think it would be a shame to mix good layers of dark eggs with fluff (and I love my fluffy birds) - Cochin are fluffy birds, very pretty, but not known for their laying capacity any longer, favs are a really good utility breed, good layers and good meat birds, your maran are good layers of a good co...

Re: Feeding bread to hens?

Too much bread is bad for them, but big bits of baguette give them something to play with, dont worry about breaking it up into tiny bits, let the birds do it themselves!! Whatever you do don't soak bread of any sort, nothing worse to give crop problems

Re: Mareks??

Have only just seen this post, what I missed was the age of the bird- 4 years old, so pretty unlikely to be mareks, I keep quite a few mareks prone breeds sebright, sabelpoot and I don't cull, or vaccinate, but try to build a resistant flock!

Re: Raptor deterrants???

Re: Trimming feathers on feet.

I have LF Brahmas and don't trim the feathers - they have Bedmax on the floor of their run, and I've never had birds tripping over their feathers......yet

Re: yellow skin and loss of feathers

We feed extra maize to help yellow legged birds stay yellow, but don't give it at all to white birds as it turns the white feathers yellow :(

Re: Cold snap.

Even if your bird has got frost bite, put on Vaseline, and massage the comb to get the blood circulating again, - frost bite isn't black - it's white if the comb is white, then it's frostbitten - (it's not the cold that gives them frost bite, it's cold and damp) I had 3 bad cases of it here last yea...

Re: Sex The Chickens

Lovely looking birds  - I usually bark up the wrong tree on sexing  - N° 1 , 2 and 3 look like pullets, but 4,5,6 and 7 look like Males - largish combs and wattles, and their sickle feathers look more 'pointed"

Re: cockerel not mating this year

I would expect to get fertile eggs from a maximum of one male to 5 females, I have had a problem this year with the cold - eggs laid on very cold days have been infertile, but those laid the day before or after have been fertile (if it was a warmer day) - this goes for all breeds from Dutch to Cochi...

Re: yellow skin and loss of feathers

Looks top me she has had a partial moult, it happens, the feathers seem to be coming through fine and could the yellow be from feeding mixed corn or maize - that gives the skin a yellow colour :?:

I love my Asians, all of them - especially my Dudes - I could see me one day having only hardfeather, and so much friendlier towards their owners than my Favs, cochins Brahmas etc - only problem I have here with Kos is they really don't do cold and wet -

Sorry Lindsay - I mixed up the posts, interesting that you live in Auvergne - I'm from Savoie, but moved to Scotland 4 years ago....... don't ask why because even I don't!! I used to have gapeworms in France, but never have over here, but Mareks I had in France and over here from time to time - I us...
