Re: my worst chicken year.

I was going to say the same thing, I don't think I could cope with what you have been through, but I'd change my luck by going for something uncomplicated breedwise. Like you, I've kept polands, great characters and maybe I've been lucky but I've only lost 2 not down to old age, but I've also had or...

Re: Help sexing buff sussex chicks

I would also guess the chick in the foreground is a boy, sussex girls do tend to feather up quicker. But it is guesswork at this stage, so do post again in a few weeks

Re: Straw vs hay vs Sawdust

Orps will come into lay when they are ready, and not before - they can be 9 months and still not in lay  Roughly if they were hatched later than May you are unlikely to see an egg before March, although I would have thought the recent spell of warmth and good light would encourage most of the...

Re: Our first cull

Well done for stopping any suffering to your hen. Its never easy when you choose to take the responsibility for it on yourself, but you obviously approached the cull properly and it sounds as though everything went as well as it possibly could =D> Don't worry if you do experience a lot of flappage i...

Re: That's IT

OMG  Firstly, I'm so sorry to hear your tales of woe; that's pretty extreme :( I can imagine the hen carnage as I've experienced that myself, but to find a cat dug up would also send me into a fury, a very upset fury. I am sure the latest precautions will work - we normally dig down a couple ...

Re: Do you wash your eggs prior to storing?

Well I never wash my eggs prior to storing as you are right, it can remove the protective coating, allowing bacteria in. Its quite easy to avoid having dirty eggs by a)not allowing hens to sleep in the nest box b)changing/turning the nesting material and other bedding material regularly and c) check...

Re: That's IT

Its gutting isn't it? The last time it happened to me I managed to startle the fox in broad daylight with my best layer in his mouth by yelling and screaming. He dropped her, and more by luck than judgement she and everybody else survived. I could tell by the amount of feather in the the pen that he...

Re: Chicken sitting!

 This sounds like a nightmare - hats off to you for agreeing to return the favour  Although to be fair I read it as you took your 7 children and Roger the cockeral over to be looked after by your friend, so in that case she would be entitled to ask a lot in return

Re: 6 Nations...... am I alone?

England won!!! I said some horrid things about George Ford and almost lost my voice during the 'post-hit-no-try' but yes!! We won! Wales seemed to be under the illusion that rugby is a game of one half.... :( England were better in the second half and overall so they deffo deserved the win

Re: 6 Nations...... am I alone?

Friend coming round for a session on the sofa with us with beer and crisps and lots of shouting. I am half Welsh, and never entirely sure who to shout for more. My 80 year Mum who is Welsh will be watching at home. I find the Welsh anthem so very moving.

Re: carcase disposal

I also bag and bin. After burying 2 LF orpingtons many years ago I realised it was far too difficult (they are very large birds!) and my garden is just not big enough. I have a couple of rose bushes planted over those birds, and they are my remembrance for all the deadstock since, furry or feathery.

I'm not quite sure, I'd start a new thread so somebody more knowledgeable than me could comment. I have a feeling that splash x black would give you blue, but I'm not sure how the w/c black would react or the cuckoo. :(

Re: Anywhere in Leeds that will cull & pluck my cockerels?

Chicken George, culling birds is not pleasant or easy, but if I and hundreds of women like me can do it, even with our quota of squeamishness and feebleness (I am referring to myself here before anybody thinks I am being sexist) I'm sure you can. I use the broomstick method on fully grown or large b...
