Re: Advice on breeds for mixed flock?

No, I was originally interested in them because, if Wikipedia is to be believed, the breed originated in a village called Faverolles which is quite close to where I live, so like you it was just for fun! What I really want are Cream Legbars, but I don't know where I can get them here. Good luck with...

Re: Advice on breeds for mixed flock?

You've got me thinking about Faverolles again! Looking on a few French websites, it seems that there are three strains of Faverolles: French (the original one), German and British. As far as the French one is concerned, it's a breed that appears to be mostly kept for meat, so if the British on...

Re: Advice on breeds for mixed flock?

I'm afraid I don't have the experience of different breeds to answer your question properly. I would just say that as far as them getting on well together is concerned, it is probably more a question of them all arriving together. They will work out their own pecking order. The Marans and Cream Lega...

Re: Hello again

Something I can't quite grasp is why there are so many people registering to join the forum and then not posting. I've just been looking at the members list - there is something like 15 pages of new members in August alone.

Re: Eglu or not?

It currently houses 7 medium-sized birds, AyeAyeMagpie. I do leave the nesting box open, as I can't guarantee that I will be up at the crack of dawn to open it up, so at least one of them sleeps in there. Likewise, I don't shut the outer door at night, but will have to do so in winter or they will g...

Re: Houdan hen

Thanks for your input, Kate! I would rather she slept with the others, as it would make less work for me, but I will give her some more time.

Re: Houdan hen

I was wondering if I should force her to sleep with the other hens now, in the Eglu, and if it would help her to integrate. I kept her isolated for a couple of days in this small henhouse, but now she mixes with the others during the day. But she still returns here at night to sleep on her own.

Houdan hen

This is Presley, a Houdan hen that was given to me recently. She's still a bit of an outcast but is not being bullied as much as she was at first. I think she's only about 3 months old as she is very light and small, and is not laying - but I have no way of knowing for sure. https://s19.postimg.cc/4...

Re: Eglu or not?

Way too late for Mama Owl, I'm sure, but I bought an Eglu this summer after battling red mite for a year, and I'm very pleased with it. I bought the Eglu Up without the run as we have a six-foot wall all round our garden (and no predator problems in the 10 years that I have kept hens), so that limit...

Re: Hello again

Thanks, both!

Yes, I had noticed that it's very quiet compared to lively it used to be... Kate, I agree that forums do seem to have a natural lifespan - and I suppose too that keeping hens is not necessarily a lifelong vocation, so people stop coming onto the forum when they no longer have any.

Sourcing Cream Legbars in France

Just in case any members in France should look in and be able to help: I would like to add some Cream Legbars to my flock and have not managed to find any sellers here in France (or at least the area where I live - near Chartres). I don't want to go down the hatching route - I did it once when one o...

Re: Poison or irritant plants

That's interesting. We have a couple of fig trees and have never noticed any allergic reaction when pruning them. Have recently had weals all over my arms when pulling up a weed with a yellow flower. It grows very tall but I have no idea what it is. I will to take a picture, unfortunately there are ...

Hello again

Hello everyone! I used to post on this forum a few years ago, under the name of Juju, but had fallen by the wayside. I tried to log in recently but could not with my previous name and login, so have re-registered. Meghen is in fact the name of one of my most recent hens - a Sussex, naturally! :) Are...
