Re: GM poultry feed in Germany

I am totally against GMO - and also feed my girls either GMO free or organic. At the end of the day we eat what they produce - and if we are putting GMO feed into them - then we will also be eating GMO eggs. Good on the Germans for this - only wish our Government had the same cojones. The only 'safe...

Re: friend's hens not laying -

When I took my hens round to his place all his hens were bright and active, I didn't pay particular attention to their comb colour at the time, but I don't think they were any less red than my girl's combs. They evidently never really picked up after the winter layoff - my impression is that they ha...

Re: Four hens equals five eggs

I got 8 new girls last month at POL, 4 started laying last week, and the others I thought would be coming into lay within a few days. On Saturday I got a shock, hubby got three eggs at 5.30am when cleaning out the coops - all small and one was broken, but throughout the day I picked up another 8 egg...

friend's hens not laying -

A month or so ago a friend of my husband mentioned to him at work that his hens were not really laying - one hen was broody but the other 5 were not, neither are they in moult. He mentioned that they were laying about 1 or two eggs a day between the 6 of them. He was unable to keep up with his egg o...

Re: Lonely snowflake

Cheers guys - just felt a bit sorry for her on her own but they all have the choice of which coop to roost in, particularly liked the 15 tog reference, even if it is a rather big coop for one hen to heat! if she gets cold enough I am sure she will have the sense to go in the other coop (she says hop...

Lonely snowflake

A couple of weeks ago I got 8 new girls, all from the same flock, near POL. I have two coops - one for 6-8 hens and one for 8-10 hens (so read the smaller number on both) The first night they all piled into one coop - then for the next few nights I noticed one hen, snowflake, was in the old coop on ...

Re: New e-petition overturn ban on feeding dried mealworms

The whole law irritates the &!*t out of me. Not allowed to eat any scraps - nothing that has been in the kitchen, not allowed to feed them any animal products - so forcing them to be vegetarian - which they are definitely NOT! The thing that really gets up my nose is that it is to protect the food c...

Re: New e-petition overturn ban on feeding dried mealworms

I admire (and share) your sentiments guys - not even my husband knows exactly what my girls get from me - so how is Defra going to know. However my point is that if they are considering dried insects in commercial feeds - how can they stop it in the domestic market. Currently nearly all feed c...

New e-petition overturn ban on feeding dried mealworms

There is a new e-petition to abolish the ban on feeding dried mealworms and insects to domestic poultry. It is currently legal to feed live mealworms to your girls but not dried mealworms. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/66338 The last paragraph of the e-petition is extremely interesting. ...

Re: A different way of feeding - warning very long post

You can just use water - and time - however I wanted to be sure I was getting pure LAB - hence the rice wash - I always have rice in the house. When I first started out I used AVC with the 'mother' but have got on better with the LAB. Now I just have a continuous bucket going, I just add feed and wa...

Re: A different way of feeding - warning very long post

I agree - chicken math is a killer, I started out with 5, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 5, 4, 3, 2, now 8 - with room for another 4 sometime in the future  As I said my main reason for trying it was I wanted to get rid of the clouds of flies I had buzzing only a couple of feet from my kitchen d...
