Re: White leghorn

My leg horns tend to panic, run and flap like mad but I've never seen them fly far? I think even the thought of flying would panic them. They panic over everything and anything!

Re: New Hens

In my experience never, introducing new hens is problematic at any time but the winter months tend to be better for pure breeds who stop laying from Oct to Feb. Hybrids no chance they will take to new hens in there own time no matter what you do

Re: Our first cull

Ohh I feel for you, I really know what that's like. I remember my first time so well, but as others have said you did the right thing for the hen. Well done x

Re: Fighting Hens

They are much better today, nothing to serious. Checked them over last night, a few feathers missing, one or two bleeding, feathers must have been pulled out! A couple of pecks to the combs but nothing to serious. It looks worse on the white hen. They are both pretending that the other hen does not e...

Re: Fighting Hens

I think the problem is one of the top ranking hens past away recently. The black tail a high ranking hen is scrapping with a lower ranking leg horn! Both must be doing battle for the empty top spot. Poor Nugget has had a right good battering sorting them out today, poor lads worn out they have both ...

Fighting Hens

Two of my hens have been scraping persistently all morning, nugget the cockeral is desperately trying to intervene and sort it out but no sooner than he's split them up they are at it again. It looks like they are going to really hurt each other if it carries on. There must be some pecking order iss...

Re: Egg peritonitis

I'm no expert but in my understanding hens hatch with the "said" number of eggs already contained in the overy. When that expires that's it finished egg laying stops. I would assume the lash was an indication of the laying process coming to an end? So maybe it's not egg peritonitis? But some other n...

Re: Egg peritonitis

I can't really imagine an hen being as it was before the peritonitis. The damage to the insides must be huge after an infection like that. The scar tissue even after healing must stop any further egg laying? The chances of further infection must be quite high? Just my thoughts on the subject but if ...

Re: Grrr some people!!!

Oh dear some people are just like that!! Egg eating is not good and its good practice to discourage. I don't think confining her to the space you have available is a bad idea at all. She just needs time to find her place to lay in safety and build her confidence. She may have layed a softie or very ...

Re: Broody again!

She is 2 this summer around July I think? She's a fab mum walks away from the chicks at 6 weeks old has a week or 2 off then she's at it again! Its to cold to isolate and try to break it, so I'm going to keep a close eye on her and let her sit it out. I'm in and out all day collecting the eggs becau...
